The other Venice entry, and different enough from Teddy’s to justify and encourage visiting both. Like Minded has a gorgeous upper deck and cafe you can grab an Aussie style flat white on your way in or out.

Teddy’s Hot House

One of the two newer concepts in LA, interesting international crowd and lots of regulars; After Venice sessions, eat at Gjusta or Gjelina. The line is long. The wait can be intense. The food is always worth it — salads, sandwiches, Mexican pozole, exceptional baked goods.

City Spa

If you want a piece of bathing history, City Spa — formerly known as Pico Burnside Baths — is where you find it. This is a classic Russian-Jewish banya, the kind of place where Leonard Koren of WET hosted bathing parties; The food is not an afterthought, don’t miss the pierogies. If you can get a massage with Vlad or Serge, clear your schedule: it’s an all-day affair in the best possible sense. City Spa is coed during women’s hours on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday nights. It makes an exceptional birthday party venue for those who appreciate the ritual. Also Sonoratown up the road for the best bean and cheese burritos in LA.

Beverly Hot Springs

Still in Koreatown, but a different experience entirely. Beverly Hot Springs sits atop what may be the only naturally uncapped hot spring in the city of Los Angeles. The water flows directly into the building — high in silica, leaving your skin feeling silky. On the inside, it feels like a cave grotto, which is either atmospheric or slightly psychedelic to explore your psyche; Maison Matho for a Parisian ham and cheese sandwich or specialty coffee.

Crystal Spa

This is home base. Housed on the third floor of a Korean shopping mall in the heart of Koreatown, Crystal Spa has been the anchor of this circuit since I discovered the magic of Korean jjimjilbangs after moving to LA. No two-week advance reservations required — walk in, get a massage, get a scrub, get right; It’s perched on top of an H Mart, which means you can descend after your sweat for groceries, a fun new drink, or ingredients for the week. Cross the street at night and you’ll find an excellent matcha ice cream at Honeybee.

The Dock

Just on the end of the harbor super close to the sea and nice adjacencies with wonderful bakery and historically preserved buildings Sauna, plunge pool and steam room are nestled within the 5th floor wellness area; Electric Suana has an amazing large window that faces the HarborHot tub outside has elaborate 360 views of the sea, Harbor and fjords

The Altar

Beautifully designed and you can tell they really worked with a range of craftspeople. They have one of the best curated shops and even if I don’t buy anything, I always go to look at the packaging. The last things I bought were a St. Lucie sauna serum and an over the counter peptide drink that tasted like gasoline. The crowd skews a little more gay and a little more fashion-forward, which I don’t mind. And they have a whole longevity clinic attached so if you want to do peptide injections and sit in a hyperbaric chamber, then this is the place; Union Square Greenmarket, OCafe, Travelers Poets and Friends, and Eva Joan

Lore Bathing Club

I was happy when Lore opened, because it’s a very different product. It’s a membership model, meant to be the kind of place you can drop into every day. There’s basically one big main room with what might be the biggest cold-plunge tub in the city and a large event sauna. They do some great Aufguss sometime led by the two founders themselves. It’s more welcoming than some of the more nightclub-feeling spots, and its clientele has a real range of ages. It’s also near my office, so I can get in and out in 30 minutes when I have to; Gasoline Alley Coffee, a great Japanese clothing store called 45r, and Clockwork Jiu-Jitsu

Elahni

Probably the least-known stop on the circuit, but actually one of the first to open. It’s been nicknamed the “speakeasy bathhouse” because it’s a small second-floor space with a four-person sauna, a four-person cold plunge, and a wellness bar to enjoy after you’re done with a circuit. The two owners are almost always there, and they’re warm and knowledgeable, so this is the place I’ll take both first-timers nervous about contrast therapy and friends who are deep into it. They also have a free take-with-you library that really captures the spiritual side of the practice; Rizzoli Books is right around the corner and Madison Square Park is close by

Bathhouse (Flatiron)

This is my go-to double-date spot. It’s more of a traditional bathhouse format in that there are no prescribed activities, and no programming you have to follow. I’ve gone and spent the whole time just sitting in the warm bath catching up with a friend. That being said, they have the most developed Aufguss program, led by Alonzo Solorzano, who won the US Aufguss championship in 2025. They have a bar and snacks on-site, which I love because bathing makes me hungry. Like Othership and The Altar, it has a vaguely night club lighting feel; the High Line, the elevated rail line turned public park that I co-founded and ran for 20 years before getting into the world of bathing

Loyly Sauna

One of Portland’s original sauna spots, now with 2 different locations in Portland, both are well worth a visit and offer massage, facials, foot soaks, and deep heat saunas from electric Iki heaters; Little T Baker.

Cupar

On the Eden Springs Loch inland near Cupar; Dive off the jetty into a fresh water lake on this wild nature reserve.

Scottish Seaside sauna Elie

Sea swim; Post-sauna snacks at The Ship Inn the fashionable town of Elie. Swim right across the bay at high tide.

Largo Castaway

In the village of Largo, with a sunset view over the Firth of Forth; The Crusoe Hotel – named after local resident Robinson Crusoe.

Big Bear and Little Bear

Soulwater’s bigger sister in the up-and-coming Granton neighborhood has two saunas, cold plunges, and sea dips; The Pitts next door offers drinks, food, and cool vibes.

This horsebox sauna was one of the UK’s OGs, initially bewildering locals. Now it’s always booked and offers fantastic sea dips; Walking along the sandy beach of the upscale neighbourhood of Portobello.

A little more sauna appropriate. One large sauna and sessions are casual and free flow.

Russian & Turkish Baths

This will always be the first bathhouse I ever visited, back in the ’90s, and I think most people would agree that it’s the OG NYC bathhouse. Unlike so many of the newer spots, this one isn’t trying to be fancy. It’s the closest you’ll get in the city to an old-world Eastern European banya. And I won’t judge you if you finish with a vodka shot, or a Baltika, or whatever else they’re pouring; there’s an eclectic crystal shop called Crystals Garden, a plant store that still feels like the New York I moved to, a Japanese sticker-and-stamp store called Nico Neco Zakkaya, a great bakery called From Lucie, and a string of quirky little food spots in between.
