The 40-million-year-old exposed volcano of Elk Rock Island might be the oldest place in the Portland area. This 13-acre natural area is a popular trail for birding, fishing, and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The island contains seven distinct habitats, including wetlands, forests, and grasslands.
